Why “for” is wrong and “of,” “about,” or “with” are correct

The word careful means “taking care to avoid danger or mistakes.” In English, the preposition changes depending on what follows:

PrepositionWhen to useExample
ofwith nouns like health, safety, reputationcareful of her health
aboutwith topics or situationscareful about what you say
withwith objects you handle or usecareful with your moneycareful with that knife

The preposition for is always wrong with careful because for shows purpose or benefit (good forbad forpay for) — not caution.
