Why 睡 and 觉 both mean “sleep”
睡 = the action of sleeping (verb)
觉 = the state of sleep (noun)
Together 睡觉 = “to sleep” (verb). The noun 觉 completes the verb.
You cannot just say 觉 alone to mean “sleep.” You can say 睡 alone. But in modern Chinese, people almost always say 睡觉 for the verb “to sleep.”
Example:
- ✅ 我想睡觉 (wǒ xiǎng shuì jiào) = I want to sleep
- ✅ 我睡了 (wǒ shuì le) = I slept (here 睡 alone is fine)
- ❌ 我想觉 (wǒ xiǎng jiào) = does not work
