How to use “complain about” (not “complain for”)

Complain About

Use complain about when you’re unhappy or annoyed about something. This is the most common way to express everyday complaints.

  • I want to complain about the terrible service at this café!
  • She always complains about the weather in London.

Complain Of

Use complain of only when talking about symptoms of illness or pain.

  • He complained of a headache.
  • She complained of feeling dizzy.

Complain For

Complain for is rare and only used in formal or legal contexts, usually meaning “to file a complaint for something.”

  • He filed a complaint for damages.
  • The company submitted a complaint for breach of contract.
