Understanding ~てしまった (Regret & Finality)

YouTube video player

あの (Ano)
↳ That
(Hito) ↳ Person
死んで (Shinde)
↳ Dying (Te-form)
しまった (Shimatta)
↳ Ended up / Unfortunately (Past tense)

Rule: 死 (shinu) → 死んで (shinde)

By using the Te-form bridge, you transform a dry statement like “died” into a poignant expression: “They are gone, and it is sad/unfortunate.”

死んで + しまった

Shimau (しま): Present/Future (will happen / I will do it).
Shimatta (しまった): Past (It happened / I did it).
