How to use “First” and “Second” when building a sentence

“First it says that it is a very big village. Second, you are aimed at some place inside it.”

That sentence works almost perfectly, you are right. But anyway we will explain the rule and maybe something else=) You have missing comma after First — a small mistake, but not a big problem. “You are aimed at “sounds like someone else is aiming you, not you doing the aiming (Better to say you aim at). Fix those two small things, and your sentence becomes perfect.

Rules for using "First" and "Second" correctly

Rules for using “First” and “Second” correctly

Put a comma after First and Second when they start a sentence.

  • ✅ First, we need to buy milk. Second, we need bread.
  • ❌ First we need to buy milk Second we need bread.

Parallel structure — Keep the grammar similar for both points.

  • ✅ First, wash your hands. Second, sit down. (both are commands)
  • ❌ First, washing your hands. Second, you sit down. (mixes grammar)

Consistency — If you use First, do not switch to Firstly unless you use Secondly.

  • ✅ First … second … third
  • ✅ Firstly … secondly … thirdly
  • ❌ First … secondly … third

Capitalization — First and Second are not capitalized unless they start a sentence (But who does this?).

Nobody

Me…
